Cat Fence!

Unfortunately we live in a very rural area and even though we are fortunate enough to have a relatively large backyard our cats seem to always want to venture into dangerous territory (across the street) to hunt for mice or whatnot. Hanging out in those hillsides are coyotes and lots of them. We've lost several cats over the course of the last few years and although we want our cats to have freedom to enjoy the outdoors we still want them to be safe. So we've installed some cat fencing.

Here is Teaka demonstrating the problem. The walls aren't very high and the cats can easily jump up onto them - and then run along them to the front of the house. With the cat fencing we put plastic netting along the wall and coming out from the wall at an angle so the cat can't see how to jump on top of it.

Here is a wall with the cat fencing installed. You can click on it for a larger picture. As you can see from the perspective of the cat there is really no way to jump onto the wall.

Here is a side gate. There is fencing all along that was well. In fact there isn't any gap in the entire yard wide enough for a cat to get through. The fence opens just fine (the plastic netting is very flexible) so going in and out isn't a problem.

Here's a shot from one of the other walls. As you can see the netting does extend up past the top of the wall but we have the best neighbors in the world and they don't mind. Plus, it isn't really THAT noticeable at all.

So there you have it! Hopefully we will now have safe and secure cats but that are not restrained from being able to go outside and enjoy the sun or chase some lizards. Now we just need to get some cats to fill the yard a bit.

Just in case anyone is wondering we are using the Cat Fence-In product. So far it is working perfectly for us!
